Tips for a good sample

Hands opening a stool sample collection tube over a toilet
  • Read the full instructions before you start.
  • Avoid contact between the sample and toilet water or urine where the instructions say so.
  • Label and seal the tube exactly as directed.
  • Post it back promptly after collection.

Always follow the instructions inside your kit. They take priority over general guidance on this site.

No elevated markers found: continue routine screening, including NHS bowel screening when invited, and stay alert to symptoms.

Elevated markers found: this does not mean you have cancer, but it does need follow-up. Share your report with your GP, who may refer you for further investigation such as a colonoscopy.

Seek medical advice promptly about any symptoms, whatever your result.
